Lafayette: Waneka Lake, Greenlee Preserve, and Colorado's Bird City

Lafayette is Colorado's first Bird City, and it lives up to the name. Between Waneka Lake's mountain reflections, Greenlee Preserve's lush wildlife habitat, and a trail system that connects to open space in every direction, this small city east of Boulder packs more photography variety into its borders than most people realize.

Waneka Lake Park

Waneka Lake Park covers 147 acres on Lafayette's western side, and it is the city's centerpiece outdoor location. The lake itself is large enough to produce genuine mountain reflections, with the Flatirons and the foothills visible to the west across the water. On still evenings, the reflection shots you can get here rival anything in Boulder.

What sets Waneka apart from other local lakes is the variety of backdrops concentrated in one park. There is an old barn structure near the park's western edge that adds a rustic element. The boathouse provides architectural interest. Open grassy shoreline gives you the classic lake-and-mountains composition. And the mature trees around the picnic areas offer shade and filtered light for when you want to switch things up mid-session.

I typically start sessions at the western shore for the mountain reflections, then work south along the shoreline as the light shifts. The park gets moderate foot traffic on summer evenings, but there is enough space to find a quiet stretch of shore for your session.

Greenlee Wildlife Preserve

Greenlee Wildlife Preserve is 13.2 acres of dense riparian habitat on Lafayette's eastern side. The city describes it as having an "almost tropical" feel, and that is accurate. Tall willows, dense shrubs, and a creek corridor create a lush, enclosed environment that feels nothing like the open prairie surrounding it.

The multi-level viewing platform is the standout feature for photography. It gives you an elevated perspective over the wetland, with layers of vegetation falling away below. For portraits and couples sessions, the platform provides built-in compositional framing. The enclosed, green atmosphere works well for images where you want a softer, more intimate feeling than the typical wide-open Colorado landscape.

Thomas Open Space

Thomas Open Space (also called Thomas Farm) sits on the north side of Lafayette and includes active farmland and the historic Thomas Barn. The barn is a genuine working-era agricultural structure, not a decorative prop, and it photographs with real character: weathered wood, honest proportions, and the Flatirons visible behind it on clear days.

The surrounding fields change with the seasons. When crops are planted, the organized rows create leading lines and texture. When the fields are fallow, the open soil and distant mountains give you a minimal, clean composition. I use Thomas Open Space for clients who want a rural, agricultural feel that you cannot find at the more polished park locations.

Coal Creek and Rock Creek Trails

Lafayette is connected by two major regional trail systems. The Coal Creek Trail runs 3.3 miles through Lafayette, linking to Louisville to the west and Erie to the east. The Rock Creek Trail extends 2.4 miles through the city's southern portion. Both are paved, flat, and lined with cottonwood trees and riparian vegetation.

For photography, these trails give you cottonwood canopy, creek-side compositions, and the ability to walk between varied backdrops without driving. The Coal Creek corridor is especially photogenic in fall when the cottonwoods peak. The trails also connect to the Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm, a 1,136-acre Boulder County open space with Stearns Lake and bald eagle habitat.

Lafayette as Colorado's Bird City

Lafayette became Colorado's first Bird City USA in 2019. Over 300 bird species have been documented in the area, thanks to the city's mix of lakes, wetlands, open space, and riparian corridors. For photography sessions, this means your backdrops come alive with natural movement: herons standing in shallows, hawks circling overhead, and songbirds in the cottonwoods.

I mention this because it genuinely affects the feel of sessions shot in Lafayette. When a great blue heron lifts off from a pond behind your family or a red-tailed hawk soars through the frame, those moments add something you cannot plan or recreate. Lafayette's commitment to bird habitat makes those moments more likely here than anywhere else I shoot in Boulder County.

Logistics and Tips

  • Parking: Waneka Lake has a large free lot off Waneka Parkway. Greenlee Preserve has street parking along Greenlee Drive. Thomas Open Space has a small trailhead lot. All are free.
  • Best light: Waneka Lake faces west, making it ideal for golden hour and sunset sessions. Greenlee Preserve is sheltered and works well at any time, though the filtered light is best in the late afternoon.
  • Accessibility: Waneka Lake has paved paths and flat terrain. Greenlee Preserve's boardwalk and platform are accessible. The Coal Creek and Rock Creek trails are fully paved.
  • Seasonal picks: Spring at Greenlee (lush vegetation), summer at Waneka (evening reflections), fall on Coal Creek Trail (golden cottonwoods), winter at Thomas Open Space (stark barn against snow).
  • Combining locations: Waneka Lake and Thomas Open Space are about a five-minute drive apart. I sometimes split a session between the two for maximum variety: water and mountains at Waneka, then rural charm at Thomas Farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Waneka Lake good for photography?

Waneka Lake Park covers 147 acres and offers Flatirons reflections on the water, an old barn backdrop near the park's edge, a boathouse, and open shoreline with mountain views. It is the most photogenic single location in Lafayette, with enough variety for an entire session without moving your car.

What is Greenlee Wildlife Preserve like for photos?

Greenlee Preserve is a hidden gem. At 13.2 acres, it is small, but the multi-level viewing platform, dense vegetation, and what the city describes as an 'almost tropical' atmosphere make it feel like a completely different world. It works best for intimate portraits and couples sessions where you want a lush, enclosed backdrop.

Why is Lafayette called Colorado's Bird City?

Lafayette earned the designation as Colorado's first Bird City USA in 2019, recognizing the community's commitment to bird habitat conservation. Over 300 bird species have been documented in the area. For photography, this means you are likely to see herons, hawks, owls, and songbirds adding natural life to your session backgrounds.

Can I do a family session at Waneka Lake with a stroller?

Yes. Waneka Lake has paved paths around much of the shoreline and flat, mowed grass areas near the boathouse and picnic shelters. It is one of the most accessible lakeside locations in Boulder County for families with strollers or anyone who needs flat, even terrain.
