Superior Outdoor & Adventure Photographer
Superior is ringed by open space and trails that connect to some of the best hiking on the Front Range. I shoot adventure sessions here that feel wild even though you are minutes from home.
Adventure Photography in Superior
People don't always think of Superior when they think of outdoor adventure photography. Boulder and Estes Park get all the attention. But the trail system around Superior is seriously impressive, and the open space views rival anything I shoot elsewhere on the Front Range.
Coalton Trailhead is the anchor. It sits on the south side of town and opens up to miles of trail that connect through to Marshall Mesa, Doudy Draw, and eventually all the way to Eldorado Springs if you keep going. The views are huge: Flatirons to the west, plains stretching east, and the foothills rolling along the horizon. For adventure photography, this is exactly the kind of landscape I love working in.
Why These Trails Work for Photography
The trails around Superior are mostly open grassland and mesa terrain, which means the light is consistent and the backgrounds are clean. I don't have to fight dense tree cover or harsh shadows the way I do on some mountain trails. Instead, I get wide skies, long sightlines, and that golden Colorado light that makes everything look incredible.
Rock Creek Trail is different. It runs through the middle of town along the creek, lined with cottonwoods and scrub. This gives me a more intimate, shaded option for sessions where you want a creek-side feel without driving up into the mountains. In the fall, the cottonwoods go gold and the light filtering through the leaves is something special.
Superior Open Space on the east side of town is another favorite. The rolling terrain and native grasses make great foregrounds, and the Flatirons fill the western horizon. I've done sessions here where people couldn't believe the photos were taken this close to a neighborhood.
What Adventure Sessions Look Like
These sessions are for people who want photos in the places they actually spend time. Runners, hikers, mountain bikers, climbers, people who walk their dog on the Coalton loop every morning. I want to photograph you doing the thing you love in the landscape where you do it.
A typical adventure session runs 60 to 90 minutes. We might start at a trailhead and walk a section of trail together while I shoot. I'll capture you in motion, then find a few spots where we stop and work the light and the landscape for more composed shots. The best results come when people forget I'm there and just do their thing.
I bring the right gear for trail work. Lightweight camera bodies, fast lenses, and I'm comfortable hiking in whatever conditions the day throws at us. If you want to start at Coalton and hike out toward Marshall Mesa, I'm in. If you want to run the Rock Creek loop while I pace alongside, I can do that too.
Best Times to Shoot
Golden hour is always the answer, but around Superior it's especially good. Because the terrain is open and the horizon is low to the east, the light gets warm and directional earlier than it does in the mountains. Morning sessions work well too, especially on the east-facing sections of Coalton Trail where the sunrise paints the Flatirons pink and orange.
Fall is peak season. Late September through October gives you amber grasses, gold cottonwoods along Rock Creek, and that clean low-angle light that makes everything pop. But spring and summer are great too. Green trails, wildflowers on the mesa edges, and sunsets that seem to last forever.
More Than Just Trail Portraits
I also shoot adventure content for brands, athletes building portfolios, and outdoor professionals who need images for websites and social media. If you're a trail runner with a sponsor, a yoga instructor who teaches outdoors, or a fitness professional building your brand, the trails around Superior give us a backyard studio with mountain views.

Coalton Trailhead
My top pick in Superior. The trailhead is off Highway 36 on the south side of town with a paved parking lot. Trails head south and west through open grassland with Flatirons views. The Marshall Mesa connector adds more terrain if you want a longer session. Best at golden hour when the west-facing views light up.
Superior Open Space
East side of town with rolling grassland and native prairie. The Flatirons dominate the western horizon. Less foot traffic than Coalton, which makes it great for sessions where you want space. Parking along the neighborhood access points.
Rock Creek Trail
A paved multi-use trail running through the center of Superior along Rock Creek. Cottonwood trees provide shade and fall color. More intimate feel than the open space trails. Good for portraits, family adventure sessions, and running photos. Multiple access points from neighborhood trailheads.
Marshall Mesa Connection
Accessible from Coalton Trailhead heading south. The trail climbs gently onto the mesa with panoramic views of the Flatirons, Boulder, and the Continental Divide. Longer hike required but the payoff is a dramatic backdrop with very few people. Best for dedicated adventure sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What trails in Superior do you shoot on most?
Coalton Trailhead is my go-to for open space and mountain views. Rock Creek Trail is great for creek-side portraits with fall color. Superior Open Space works well for wide-open grassland shots. And the Marshall Mesa connection gives us dramatic elevated views if you are up for a longer hike.
Do I need to be athletic for an adventure session?
Not at all. The trails around Superior are mostly flat to gentle grade, so they work for all fitness levels. We go at your pace, and I find the best spots for light and landscape along the way. This is about you in a place you love, not a fitness test.
What should I wear to an outdoor session?
Wear what you actually wear outdoors. Trail runners, hiking boots, your favorite flannel, whatever feels like you. Avoid large logos and bright neon. Layers are smart because Colorado temps can shift during a session. I will give you specific guidance when you book.
How long is a typical adventure session?
Most adventure sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That gives us time to hike to a good spot, work the light, and get a variety of shots. If you want a longer session that covers more trail, we can plan for that too.
Can you shoot mountain biking or trail running in action?
Yes. I shoot action sports regularly and have the gear and positioning experience to capture you at speed. For trail running and biking sessions, we plan the route in advance so I can set up at the best angles. The trails around Coalton and Marshall Mesa work especially well for this.
