Real moments in a town that keeps surprising me
Superior sits in this sweet spot between Boulder and Broomfield where open space meets neighborhood life. I love shooting here because the trails, the parks, and the Flatirons views give me options that most suburbs just don't have.
Why I Love Shooting in Superior
Superior surprises people. They expect a quiet bedroom community and instead they find miles of open space, Flatirons views from the trail, and a town that feels both connected and tucked away. I started shooting here because a few families asked me to, and I kept coming back because the locations are genuinely great.
What makes Superior work for photography is the contrast. You have the wide-open grassland feel of Coalton Trailhead and Superior Open Space, then the tighter community spaces like the Town Center and the neighborhood parks along Rock Creek. That range means I can offer clients completely different looks without driving anywhere. A family session might start at Community Park with the kids on the playground and end ten minutes later on a trail with the Flatirons in the background.
The Light and Landscape
The open space surrounding Superior gives me something I don't always get in more built-up areas: unobstructed light. Coalton Trailhead faces west toward the mountains, so at golden hour the whole landscape goes warm and soft. Rock Creek Trail runs through the middle of town with cottonwoods that light up gold in October. And the views from the south side of Superior Open Space, looking toward the Flatirons and the foothills, are some of the best I've found along the Front Range.
Fall is stunning here. The open space grasses turn amber, the creek-side trees change color, and the low sun angle makes everything look rich. But I shoot in Superior year-round. Spring brings green trails and wildflowers along the mesa edges. Summer gives me those long golden hours that last until 8:30. Winter has its own beauty: snow on the foothills, crisp air, and that quiet feeling when the trails empty out.
What I Shoot in Superior
I bring all five of my photography services to Superior, and each one has great spots to work with:
- Youth Sports Photography: Superior Elementary fields, Eldorado K-8, and Community Park courts host games and practices throughout the year. I know these fields and where to position myself for the best action shots.
- Outdoor & Adventure Photography: Coalton Trailhead, the Marshall Mesa connector, Superior Open Space, and Rock Creek Trail. This town is surrounded by trails, and the backdrop options are outstanding.
- Family Photography: Community Park playground, Rock Creek greenway, Superior Town Center, and the neighborhood parks tucked between subdivisions. Families here have active kids, and I love sessions where everyone can move and play.
- Portrait & Headshot Photography: Superior Town Center has clean modern architecture that works well for professional headshots. The Original Town area has character. And the open space trails give me natural backdrops with Flatirons views.
- Local Business Photography: Superior Marketplace, Town Center shops, and the businesses along Original Superior. I help local owners show who they are and what their spaces look like to real customers.
My Favorite Spots in Superior
Coalton Trailhead is probably my top pick. The trail heads south and west with views of the Flatirons and the foothills, and the grassland on either side gives me clean, open compositions. At golden hour the light there is incredible.
Community Park is where I do a lot of family and youth sports work. The playground area is great for little kids who need to burn energy during a session, and the sports fields are well-maintained. For something a bit more natural, Rock Creek Trail winds through town with cottonwoods and creek-side spots that feel worlds away from the subdivision just beyond the trees.
Superior Town Center is growing on me. The architecture is new and clean, which works well for headshots and branding sessions. And Original Superior, the old town area near the intersection of Coal Creek and Marshall Road, has a completely different vibe: smaller buildings, more texture, more history.
Local Knowledge Matters
I know where the parking is at Coalton (and that the lot fills up on weekend mornings). I know which sections of Rock Creek Trail are best for photos versus which ones have too much foot traffic. I know the light patterns at Community Park and when the fields are free. That kind of local detail doesn't show up on Google Maps, but it shows up in the photos.
Superior families often find me because they're looking for someone who knows the area and doesn't need to scout locations the day of the shoot. That's me. I drive through Superior regularly for sessions in Boulder, Louisville, and Broomfield, and I've shot enough here to know exactly where to go and when.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best photo locations in Superior?
My favorites are Coalton Trailhead for open space and mountain views, Community Park for family sessions and youth sports, Rock Creek Trail for creek-side portraits with cottonwood trees, and Superior Town Center for headshots and business photos. Each spot has a different feel, and I can help you pick the right one for your session.
When is the best time of year for photos in Superior?
Fall is gorgeous here. The grasses in the open space turn amber, the cottonwoods along Rock Creek go gold, and the light is warm and low. But every season works. Spring brings green trails, summer gives you long golden-hour sessions, and winter has crisp mountain views with snow on the foothills.
Do you travel to Superior or are you based there?
I am based in Boulder, which is about 15 minutes from Superior. I shoot in Superior regularly and know the area well. There is no travel fee for Superior sessions since it is so close to my home base.
How far in advance should I book?
For fall sessions, I recommend 3 to 4 weeks notice since that is my busiest season. Spring and summer sessions usually need a week or two. Youth sports tournament coverage should be booked as soon as you have the schedule.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
Colorado weather is part of the deal. If there is a serious storm, we reschedule at no charge. But clouds, wind, and even light rain often make for better photos than a plain blue sky. I watch the forecast closely and will reach out if I think we need to adjust plans.
