Family Photography in Louisville
Louisville is a family town, and you can see it everywhere. Kids on bikes along Coal Creek Trail, families spreading out blankets at Cottonwood Park, the Saturday morning energy at Louisville Community Park. I photograph families in Louisville the way they actually are: messy, fun, loud, loving. No matching outfits required.
Real Family Moments in Louisville
Here's what I've learned shooting families: the best photos happen when nobody is looking at the camera. Dad tossing a kid in the air at Louisville Community Park. Two siblings racing each other down the Coal Creek Trail path. Mom laughing because the toddler just did something ridiculous. Those are the images that end up on your wall ten years from now, not the stiff lineup where everyone is smiling on command.
I shoot family sessions as loosely as possible. We'll meet at a park or trail, and I'll let your family do their thing while I move around and find the angles. If your kids want to climb a tree at Cottonwood Park, great. If your teenager wants to sit on a bench and pretend they're too cool for photos, I'll get a shot that actually looks like them. The goal is to photograph your family as you are, not as some idealized version of yourselves.
Where to Shoot in Louisville
Louisville has a bunch of great spots for family sessions, and the right one depends on your family's vibe:
- Louisville Community Park: Big open fields, playground equipment, and good light in the late afternoon. Works for families with younger kids who need space to run.
- Cottonwood Park: Quieter, more tree cover, nice for a relaxed walk-and-shoot session. The trees give you shade and interesting backgrounds.
- Coal Creek Trail: Perfect for families who like to walk. The trail is flat and easy, and in fall the cottonwoods create a golden tunnel. Strollers work fine on the paved sections.
- McCaslin Boulevard area: If you want something more urban, the commercial areas along McCaslin have some interesting architecture and a different look from the parks.
- Your own yard: Some of my favorite family sessions have been in people's backyards. The swing set your kids actually play on. The porch where you drink coffee. Home is real, and real is what I'm after.
How Family Sessions Work
Most family sessions run about an hour. I'll arrive a few minutes early to scout the light and figure out the best route through whatever location we've chosen. Then we walk, play, sit, whatever feels natural. I'll give some gentle direction if we need it ("hey, walk toward me" or "pick up your kid and spin them"), but I'm not going to micromanage your family into stiff poses.
I shoot a lot of frames because kids move fast and expressions change in a blink. After the session, I edit the best images and deliver them through an online gallery, usually within two weeks. You get high-resolution files you can print, share, and use however you want.
Timing and Seasons
Late afternoon is the sweet spot for Louisville family sessions. The light gets warm and soft about an hour before sunset, and it looks beautiful in the parks and along Coal Creek. Fall is the most popular season because of the color, but don't sleep on spring. Louisville turns green early and the fresh growth along the trails is really pretty. Winter sessions are quieter and more intimate, and a light dusting of snow makes everything look magical.
I'm in Louisville all the time from my base in Boulder. If you want to book a family session, just tell me a bit about your family and what you're looking for. I'll suggest a spot and a time that works.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should we wear for a family photo session in Louisville?
Wear what you are comfortable in. Coordinating colors (not matching outfits) look good on camera. Earthy tones and muted colors photograph well against Louisville's green parks and golden trails. Avoid big logos and neon colors.
How do you handle young kids who will not sit still?
I do not expect kids to sit still. I follow their energy and shoot around it. Some of the best family photos come from kids being kids: running, climbing, laughing, even crying. I have two kids of my own, so I get it.
What is the best park in Louisville for family photos?
It depends on your family. Louisville Community Park is great for active families with young kids who need room to run. Cottonwood Park is quieter and more shaded. Coal Creek Trail works if your family likes walking together.
How many photos do we receive from a family session?
A typical one-hour family session delivers 40-60 edited images. Every image is color-corrected and polished. You receive high-resolution digital files through an online gallery.
Can we include our pets in the family session?
Yes. I have two dogs myself (Penny Lane and Chewbacca), so I am very comfortable with pets in the frame. Dogs, cats, whatever is part of your family. Louisville's parks and trails are dog-friendly.
