Outdoor & Adventure Photography in Longmont

Longmont sits right where the plains meet the foothills, and that gives you some of the best outdoor photography options on the Front Range. From the St. Vrain Greenway winding through town to Button Rock Preserve and Rabbit Mountain just up the road, there's no shortage of places to shoot.

Longmont's Outdoor Access Is Underrated

People think of Boulder when they think of outdoor photography in Colorado, and I get it. But Longmont has trail and open space access that rivals anywhere on the Front Range. The St. Vrain Greenway is a paved trail system that runs through the heart of town, connecting parks, ponds, and cottonwood groves. It's perfect for running, cycling, or hiking portraits without driving anywhere remote.

Head west from town and things get wilder fast. Button Rock Preserve is a personal favorite. The trail up to Ralph Price Reservoir winds through a rocky canyon with creek crossings, pine forests, and views that make people forget they're twenty minutes from a Target. Rabbit Mountain is another go-to spot, with open meadow trails and panoramic views of the Indian Peaks and Longs Peak.

What Adventure Sessions Look Like Here

When I say adventure photography, I mean we're actually doing the thing. If you're a trail runner, I'm photographing you running. If you mountain bike, we find a section of trail with good light and I set up while you ride through. If you climb, hike, fish, or paddle, we build the session around your activity.

At Union Reservoir, I've shot paddleboarders, kayakers, and anglers. The reservoir is flat and calm most mornings, and the sunrise light reflected off the water is something else. The St. Vrain Creek through town is another great water feature for sessions, especially in late spring when the flow is up and the cottonwoods are green.

Planning Your Longmont Outdoor Session

For golden hour sessions, I usually recommend meeting about 90 minutes before sunset. That gives us time to hike to a spot, get comfortable, and shoot through the best light. Morning sessions work well at Union Reservoir and Rabbit Mountain, where the east-facing views catch the sunrise.

I come prepared for the terrain and conditions. You don't need to worry about whether I can keep up on a trail or handle uneven ground. I moved to Colorado because I love being outside, and that shows up in the work. These aren't photos from the parking lot. They're photos from the trail, the water, the summit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of outdoor activities can you photograph in Longmont?

Pretty much anything. Trail running, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, cycling. If you do it outside, I can photograph it. I bring the right gear for the terrain and conditions.

Do I need to be athletic for an outdoor session?

Not at all. Adventure photography covers a wide range. A casual hike along St. Vrain Greenway counts just as much as a summit push. I tailor the session to your comfort level and activity. The goal is to photograph you doing something you enjoy in a place you love.

What should I wear for an outdoor photography session?

Wear what you'd normally wear for the activity. If we're hiking, wear your hiking clothes and boots. If we're paddleboarding, wear what you paddle in. Authentic gear looks better than anything staged. I'll offer suggestions on colors that work well with the location if you want input.

How long are outdoor adventure sessions?

Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the activity and location. If we're hiking to a remote spot, plan for additional travel time. I'll outline the timeline when we plan the session so there are no surprises.

What happens if the weather is bad on session day?

Colorado weather changes fast, and sometimes that works in our favor. Clouds and dramatic skies can make for better photos than bluebird days. If conditions are truly unsafe (lightning, heavy rain, extreme wind), we reschedule at no extra cost. I keep a close eye on forecasts and will communicate early if I think we need to move the date.
