Lafayette has a youth sports scene that punches above its weight. Between the rec leagues, club teams, and school programs, there are kids playing something on these fields pretty much every weekend. I have spent a lot of time on the sidelines at Waneka Lake Park and Pioneer Elementary, and the energy here is the real deal.

What I like about Lafayette youth sports is that it still feels like community sports. The parents know each other, the coaches are local, and the kids are out there because they love playing. That energy shows up in the photos. I am not just shooting the game. I am shooting the pregame nerves, the halftime huddles, the post-goal celebrations where a kid gets mobbed by teammates. Those moments matter more than a perfectly composed action shot.

Waneka Lake Park is the main hub for outdoor sports in Lafayette. The fields there host soccer, lacrosse, flag football, and more throughout the year. I like shooting at Waneka because the backdrop is great: you get the lake on one side and open sky on the other, and the late-afternoon light rakes across the fields in a way that gives me clean, warm images without harsh shadows.

Where I Shoot Youth Sports in Lafayette

Beyond Waneka Lake Park, there are several spots I work at regularly:

• Pioneer Elementary fields: These fields get a lot of rec league and school use. The grass is usually in good shape, and the east-facing orientation means afternoon games have solid light.
• Angevine Middle School: Middle school sports here are competitive and fun. I have covered soccer, track, and basketball at Angevine, and the school community really supports their athletes.
• Lafayette rec league venues: The city rec programs run leagues for multiple sports and age groups. These games have a great atmosphere because families bring the whole crew and camp out on the sidelines.

I also shoot indoor sports at Lafayette gyms and recreation centers. Basketball and volleyball have different lighting challenges than outdoor fields, but I have dialed in my settings for those environments over years of shooting.

What You Get From a Sports Photographer Who Cares

I played sports growing up, and I coach my own kids now. I understand the game, and that matters behind the camera. I know when the play is about to break open, when a defender is about to get beat, when the goalkeeper is about to make a save. I am already pointing the lens in the right direction before it happens because I am reading the game, not just reacting to it.

For tournament and game coverage, I shoot the full experience. The warmup drills, the coin flip, the first whistle, the water breaks, the coach drawing up a play in the dirt. I shoot the parents in the crowd too, because their reactions are half the story. When a parent sees a photo of themselves cheering at the exact moment their kid scored, that is when people get emotional about the work.

How It Works

For individual games, I typically arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to scout the light and pick my angles. I shoot from the sidelines and behind the goals, moving around to cover the action from multiple perspectives. For tournaments, I can cover a full day or multiple games depending on your needs.

I also do team and individual portraits on the field. These are not stiff, standing-at-attention photos. I want the kids in their element: cleats in the grass, ball in hand, ready to play. I will get the standard team group shot too, but the individual portraits are where the personality comes through.

I deliver edited images within a week for most sessions, faster for tournaments if you need them. Everything is shot in natural light, and I edit for accurate color and clean exposure. No heavy filters, no overdone effects.
