Lafayette Outdoor & Adventure Photographer

Lafayette sits in this sweet spot where the plains meet the foothills, and the trail system here is better than most people realize. Waneka Lake gets all the attention (and it deserves it), but the Coal Creek Trail, Rock Creek Trail, and the open space around town give me options for outdoor sessions that feel genuinely wild even though you are ten minutes from a coffee shop.

Why Lafayette Works for Outdoor Photography

People are sometimes surprised when I suggest Lafayette for an outdoor or adventure session. Boulder gets all the love (and I shoot there constantly), but Lafayette has something Boulder does not: space. Wide-open views, rolling grassland, big sky. When you are on the Waneka Lake loop trail on a clear evening, the Indian Peaks stretch across the western horizon and the light goes pink and gold over the water. It is a different kind of Colorado beauty than what you see on Instagram, and I think it photographs even better.

The trails here are also less crowded. In Boulder, I sometimes have to time my shots around other hikers and bikers. In Lafayette, especially on the Coal Creek Trail or Thomas Open Space, I can set up a shoot and have the trail to ourselves. That makes a big difference for the feel of the photos.

My Favorite Outdoor Spots in Lafayette

The Waneka Lake loop trail is my starting recommendation for most outdoor sessions. The 1.2-mile paved loop is flat and easy, which makes it accessible for everyone, but the views are anything but ordinary. The lake reflects the sky and mountains, and there are spots along the trail where you get cottonwood trees framing the water with the peaks behind. Golden hour here is something I look forward to.

Coal Creek Trail extends through Lafayette and connects to Louisville and beyond. The sections near Lafayette have this mix of open prairie and creekside cottonwoods that give you two different looks in the same session. In fall, the trees along Coal Creek go gold and the trail tunnel effect is gorgeous.

Rock Creek Trail runs along the eastern edge of town and gives you wide views of the foothills to the west. It is a newer trail but well-maintained, and the grassland along it has a great texture in the evening light. This is where I go when someone wants that wide-open Colorado feel.

Thomas Open Space is the spot I recommend for people who want something quieter and less polished. The trails there wind through native prairie with views of the foothills, and on a good evening the light turns the grasses gold. It feels like you are out in the middle of nowhere even though you can see rooftops in the distance.

What Outdoor Sessions Look Like

I am not a pose-and-hold photographer. Outdoor sessions with me involve movement. We walk the trail, we stop when the light is right, and I shoot while you are doing real things. If you are a runner, we get you running. If you are a hiker, we hike. If you are a mountain biker, bring the bike and we will find a spot where I can get you in motion with the mountains behind you.

For couples or individuals, I love sessions that start with a walk and build as the light changes. The first 20 minutes are usually about getting comfortable. By the time golden hour hits, people have loosened up and the photos start to feel natural. That transition is one of my favorite parts of the process.

Adventure sessions are more involved. If you want to climb something, scramble up a rock, or mountain bike a trail, we plan it out in advance. I bring the right gear, scout the angles, and make sure we are in the right place at the right time. These sessions take more planning but the results are worth it.

Timing and Light

For Lafayette outdoor sessions, I almost always recommend starting 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. The trails here face west, which means the last hour of light puts the mountains right behind you with warm, directional light on your face. Waneka Lake is best about 45 minutes before sunset when the water starts reflecting the sky colors.

Spring and fall are my favorite seasons here. The cottonwoods along Coal Creek peak in late September, and spring wildflowers show up in the open spaces by mid-May. Summer works too, but I push sessions later in the evening to avoid the midday heat and harsh overhead light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lafayette really good for outdoor photography compared to Boulder?

Different, not less. Boulder has the Flatirons and mountain trails. Lafayette has wide-open prairie views, Waneka Lake, and the Indian Peaks visible on the horizon. The trails are less crowded, the sky feels bigger, and the light over the open space is incredible. I recommend Lafayette for sessions where you want space and a different Colorado look.

What is the best trail in Lafayette for photos?

Waneka Lake loop trail is my top pick for most sessions because it gives you water, mountains, trees, and open sky all in one short loop. Coal Creek Trail is best for fall sessions when the cottonwoods change color. Thomas Open Space is where I go for a quieter, more rugged feel.

How long does an outdoor session in Lafayette take?

Most outdoor sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. I like to start about an hour before sunset so we can walk, get comfortable, and hit golden hour at the right moment. Adventure sessions with hiking or biking may run longer depending on the plan. We will work out the timing when you book.

What should I wear for an outdoor photo session?

Wear what feels like you. Layers are smart in Colorado because the temperature can drop 15 degrees in an hour. Avoid large logos and busy patterns. Solid colors and earth tones tend to work well with the natural landscape. I send a more detailed prep guide after you book.

Can we bring our dog to the outdoor session?

Absolutely. Dogs are welcome on the Lafayette trails, and I love including them in sessions. Waneka Lake and Coal Creek Trail are both dog-friendly. Just bring a leash and maybe a few treats, and I will make sure your dog looks great in the photos.
