Lafayette Photographer

Small-town roots, big Colorado backdrops

Lafayette has this great energy that sits somewhere between small-town Colorado and the growing Front Range. I love shooting here because the town has held onto its character while everything around it changes. Waneka Lake alone gives me more variety than some entire cities. From the sports fields to Old Town, there is always something real happening.

Why Lafayette Works for Photography

Lafayette is one of those places I keep coming back to because it surprises me every time. From my home base in Boulder, it is a quick drive east on Baseline or South Boulder Road, and the scenery shifts from mountain foothills to rolling open space in minutes. What I love about Lafayette is the mix: you get Waneka Lake with its wide-open water views and the Indian Peaks visible on the horizon, then five minutes away you are on Public Road with brick storefronts and string lights.

The town has changed a lot in the last few years, but the bones are still there. Old Town Lafayette has a texture that newer developments just do not have. The buildings along East Simpson Street and Public Road have been around for over a century in some cases, and that character shows up in photos. Weathered brick, hand-painted signs, narrow sidewalks with trees growing through the concrete. I gravitate toward that stuff.

Lafayette Photography, Season by Season

Waneka Lake is the star here no matter what time of year. In fall, the cottonwoods around the lake turn gold and the light reflecting off the water is something special. Winter brings a quieter vibe with snow on the surrounding fields and crisp afternoon light. Spring is when the trails around the lake come alive again, and summer gives you those long Colorado evenings where the sun does not set until almost 8:30.

One thing I appreciate about Lafayette is that it sits at a slightly lower elevation than Boulder, so spring comes a little earlier and fall holds on a little longer. That extra week or two of color makes a real difference when you are planning outdoor sessions.

What I Shoot in Lafayette

I bring all five of my photography services to Lafayette, and each one finds a natural fit here:

  • Youth Sports Photography: Lafayette rec leagues keep Waneka Lake Park and Pioneer Elementary fields busy year-round. I shoot action, emotion, and the unscripted moments that parents want to remember.
  • Outdoor & Adventure Photography: The Waneka Lake loop trail, Coal Creek Trail, and Rock Creek Trail give me options for everything from casual walks to full adventure sessions with the Indian Peaks as a backdrop.
  • Family Photography: Waneka Lake, Josephine Park, and Harney-Lastoka Park are my go-to family spots. Flat trails, open grass, water features. Kids can move around without anyone worrying.
  • Portrait & Headshot Photography: Old Town Lafayette has the kind of texture and warmth that makes portraits feel authentic. The Public Road corridor and East Simpson Street are my favorite backdrops here.
  • Local Business Photography: Public Road restaurants, East Simpson shops, Baseline Brewing. Lafayette has a growing business community that still feels local, and I help those businesses show the real people behind the brand.

My Favorite Lafayette Spots

Waneka Lake is the obvious first answer. The 1.2-mile loop trail gives you water, grassland, mountain views, and usually a blue heron or two. For family sessions, the east side of the lake has great late-afternoon light with the Indian Peaks behind you. The west side is better for sunrise shoots if anyone is up for that.

Old Town Lafayette is where I go when I want something with more character. Public Road between Baseline and South Boulder Road has this stretch of restaurants, shops, and old buildings that photograph really well. The light comes through at sharp angles in the late afternoon, and the brick walls pick it up beautifully.

Thomas Open Space is a hidden gem. Most people drive right past it, but the trails there give you wide views of the foothills with prairie grasses in the foreground. It is quiet, it is open, and the light is good pretty much all evening.

Working With a Lafayette Photographer

I live in Boulder, about fifteen minutes from downtown Lafayette. That means I know the area, I know the traffic patterns, and I know where to park (which matters more than people think). I have shot youth sports at Waneka Lake fields, family sessions at Josephine Park, and headshots on Public Road enough times to know exactly where the light will be at any given hour.

If you have a specific spot in Lafayette that means something to you, I am always happy to shoot there. The best photos happen in places where people feel comfortable, and sometimes that is your own backyard or a neighborhood park I have never been to. I will make it work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Lafayette from your home base in Boulder?

Lafayette is about a 15-minute drive from Boulder, depending on which part of town you are in. I take Baseline Road or South Boulder Road and it is a straight shot. No travel fee for Lafayette sessions.

What is the best location in Lafayette for outdoor photos?

Waneka Lake is my top pick for most sessions. The loop trail gives you water views, mountain backdrops, and open grass all in one spot. For something with more urban character, Old Town Lafayette along Public Road has great texture and light. Thomas Open Space is my recommendation for wide-open prairie views with the foothills in the background.

When is the best time of year for photos in Lafayette?

Fall is my favorite, especially late September through October when the cottonwoods around Waneka Lake turn gold. But every season works here. Lafayette sits at a slightly lower elevation than Boulder, so you get a little extra warmth in spring and fall. Summer evenings are long and golden, and winter has clean, crisp light.

Do you photograph youth sports games and tournaments in Lafayette?

Yes. I shoot rec league games, club matches, and school events at fields around Lafayette including Waneka Lake Park, Pioneer Elementary, and Angevine Middle School. I cover the action plus the in-between moments that parents love. Reach out as soon as you know the schedule so I can hold the date.

What if the weather is bad on our session day?

Colorado weather is unpredictable, and I plan for it. If there is a serious storm, we reschedule at no charge. But clouds, overcast skies, and even light rain often make for better photos than full sun. I watch the forecast closely and will be in touch if I think we need to adjust.
