Where the plains meet the foothills. Clear Creek, Lookout Mountain, and a downtown that actually feels like a town.
Golden sits right where the plains meet the foothills, and that transition zone gives me some of the most interesting light and landscapes along the Front Range. I drive through Golden regularly on my way to shoot at Red Rocks or up in the mountains, and I always think the same thing: this town deserves more attention from photographers.
Why Golden Works So Well for Photography
Golden has this thing where it feels like a small mountain town but it's 20 minutes from Denver. Clear Creek runs right through the middle of downtown, there's a welcome arch over Washington Avenue, and you can see Lookout Mountain from basically anywhere. It's the kind of place where the backdrop does half the work for me.
What I really like about Golden is the contrast. You can walk from a brick-lined main street to a creek trail to a foothill trailhead in about ten minutes. That means in a single session we can get completely different looks without driving anywhere. Urban, natural, mountain views. It's all right there.
My Favorite Golden Spots to Shoot
Clear Creek Trail is where most of my Golden sessions start. The creek itself is great, especially in late afternoon when the water catches the light and the cottonwoods throw long shadows. Families love it because kids can throw rocks in the creek between frames, and it keeps everyone relaxed and having fun instead of standing around waiting for me to pose them.
Lookout Mountain is another one I keep coming back to. The road up gives you these overlooks where the entire Denver metro spreads out below, and the light up there in the evening is really something. It works for couples, senior portraits, adventure sessions. The vibe is completely different from anything you'd get in town.
North Table Mountain surprises people. It's this flat-topped mesa with wildflowers in spring and golden grass in fall, and the views stretch in every direction. The hike isn't bad either, maybe 20 minutes to get to the good spots. South Table Mountain has a similar feel but is closer to town and a bit easier to access with younger kids or anyone who doesn't want a full hike.
Downtown Golden on Washington Avenue has that small-town character I love for portraits and headshots. The old storefronts, the creek bridge, the Mines campus nearby. It's not trying too hard. It just looks good. Golden History Park is a hidden gem too. The old homestead buildings and open meadows give you a rustic Colorado feel without driving an hour into the mountains.
What I Shoot in Golden
I bring all five of my photography services into Golden:
- Youth Sports Photography: Golden has active youth leagues and I shoot at fields and facilities around town. Mines also brings college-level athletics into the mix.
- Outdoor and Adventure Photography: Between Lookout Mountain, North Table, South Table, and Clear Creek, Golden is packed with outdoor session options. If you want real adventure photography close to the city, this is the place.
- Family Photography: Clear Creek Trail and Lions Park are perfect for families with kids. Flat paths, water to play in, mountain views. Everyone stays happy.
- Portrait and Headshot Photography: Washington Avenue gives me a clean small-town backdrop. The Mines campus works great for graduates. Lookout Mountain adds drama for something different.
- Local Business Photography: Golden's business community is tight-knit, from the restaurants on Washington Ave to the breweries and outdoor gear shops. I help local businesses show their personality through honest, real photography.
The Light in Golden
Golden sits in this valley between the mesas and Lookout Mountain, and that geography does interesting things with the light. In the evening, the sun drops behind Lookout Mountain and you get this soft, diffused glow that lasts longer than you'd expect. Morning light hits North Table Mountain first and works its way down into town. Both are great for shooting.
Fall is my favorite season here. The cottonwoods along Clear Creek go bright yellow, the grass on the mesas turns gold (fitting, right?), and the air gets that Colorado clarity that makes colors pop. Spring is solid too, especially when the wildflowers bloom on North Table. Summer means tubing on Clear Creek, which honestly makes for some of the most fun family photos I take all year.
Getting There From Boulder
Golden is about a 30-minute drive from my home base in Boulder, straight down Highway 93. I'm in the area regularly because it's on my route to Red Rocks and the foothills west of Denver. No travel fee for Golden sessions. It's close, it's easy, and it's one of those towns I genuinely look forward to shooting in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the best spots for photos in Golden?
Clear Creek Trail is my go-to for families because the water, cottonwoods, and mountain views create a natural setting where everyone can relax. Lookout Mountain is incredible for portraits and couples with its overlook views of the whole metro area. North and South Table Mountain offer wide-open mesa landscapes with wildflowers in spring. Downtown Washington Avenue works great for headshots and business photos with its small-town Colorado character.
When is the best time of year for a photo session in Golden?
Fall is hard to beat. The cottonwoods along Clear Creek turn gold, the mesa grasses are warm, and the light is low and flattering. Spring brings wildflowers to North Table Mountain. Summer is fun if you want to include Clear Creek activities like tubing or wading. Winter mornings with frost along the creek can be really beautiful too. Every season has something going for it.
Do you charge a travel fee for Golden sessions?
No travel fee for Golden. It is about 30 minutes from my home base in Boulder, and I drive through the area regularly. It is one of the easiest locations on my shooting schedule.
How long does a typical session in Golden take?
Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That gives us time to shoot in multiple spots without rushing. If we are hiking up North Table Mountain or Lookout Mountain, I usually suggest allowing a little extra time for the walk. I will help you plan the timing based on where we are shooting and what light we are working with.
Can we combine multiple locations in one Golden session?
Absolutely. That is one of the best things about Golden. Clear Creek, downtown Washington Avenue, and the trailheads are all within a few minutes of each other. We can easily mix creek shots with downtown backdrops or start in town and end up on a mesa overlook, all without spending half the session in the car.
