A growing town with open skies and real community
Erie is one of those places that surprises people. It sits right between Boulder and Longmont, growing fast but still holding onto that small-town feel. I love shooting here because the open spaces give you these wide mountain views that bigger cities just can't match. New neighborhoods, old town charm, and families who are putting down roots. That combination makes for honest, relaxed photography.
Why Erie Works for Photography
I started getting calls from Erie families a few years ago, and once I drove out and saw the light there, I understood why people were moving in so fast. Erie sits on this high plateau between Boulder and Longmont, and the views are something else. You can see the whole Front Range from Longs Peak down to Pikes Peak on a clear day. That kind of backdrop doesn't need any help from me.
Erie Community Park is where a lot of my work happens here. It's big, well-maintained, and has everything from soccer fields to open grass areas perfect for family sessions. I've shot youth tournaments there on Saturday mornings and come back the same afternoon for a family session near the playground. The park has good light almost all day because there aren't many tall trees blocking the western sun.
The Erie Landscape
What sets Erie apart from the rest of the Front Range is the open space. While Boulder and Louisville have foothills pressing in close, Erie gives you these wide, unbroken views. Thomas Reservoir is one of my favorite spots for portrait and family work. The water, the grass, the mountains behind it. Simple and beautiful without being overdone.
Coal Creek Trail is another one I keep coming back to. It winds through natural areas with cottonwoods and prairie grasses that change color with the seasons. Fall along Coal Creek is underrated. The golden light through the cottonwood canopy is as good as anything you'll find in Boulder, but without the crowds.
The old Erie Town Center has its own character too. The original buildings, the small shops, the quiet streets. It's a completely different feel from the newer developments, and that contrast makes for interesting photos. I've done branding shoots for local businesses down there where the old brick and storefront windows give everything a warm, grounded look.
What I Shoot in Erie
I bring all five of my services out to Erie:
- Youth Sports Photography: Erie has a growing youth sports scene. I shoot at Erie Community Park fields and school facilities around town. The rec leagues and club teams here are getting competitive, and parents want real action shots, not posed team photos.
- Outdoor & Adventure Photography: Coal Creek Trail, Thomas Reservoir, and the open spaces around town. Erie's landscape is wide and dramatic, perfect for sessions where people want to be outside and moving.
- Family Photography: Erie Community Park, Thomas Reservoir, and the newer neighborhood parks. Families here tend to be active and outdoorsy, which is exactly my style. Let the kids run. I'll get the shots.
- Portrait & Headshot Photography: Erie Town Center for that small-town feel, or the open spaces for natural-light portraits with mountain views. Either way, the light in Erie is consistently good.
- Local Business Photography: Erie's business community is growing fast. New restaurants, fitness studios, shops in Town Center. I help local businesses show who they are with photos that feel real, not stock.
The Light Out Here
I talk about light a lot because it matters more than any camera setting or editing trick. Erie gets some of the best light on the Front Range because of its elevation and open terrain. There's nothing blocking the western sky, so golden hour lasts longer and hits harder here than in cities tucked up against the foothills.
Summer evenings are my favorite time to shoot in Erie. The sun drops slowly behind the mountains and throws this warm orange light across the open fields. Winter works too. The low angle of the winter sun creates long shadows and soft contrast that's ideal for portraits. Spring can be windy (this is Colorado), but that wind gives you movement in hair and clothes that looks natural and alive in photos.
Getting There and Getting Started
Erie is an easy drive from my home base in Boulder. I head east on Arapahoe or take 287 and I'm there in about 25 minutes. No travel fee for Erie sessions. I know the area well enough now to suggest the right spot based on the time of day, the season, and what kind of photos you're looking for. If you have a favorite park or trail, I'm always happy to scout it beforehand and figure out the best angles and timing.
