Family Photography in Denver

Denver's parks are some of the best family photography locations along the Front Range. Washington Park, City Park, Cheesman Park. Big mature trees, open lawns, water features, and that Colorado light that makes everything look warm. I shoot family sessions across Denver every week.

Family sessions are about real interactions, not posed lineups. When I show up to Washington Park with a family of five, I'm not going to spend 45 minutes arranging everyone's hands. I'm going to let the kids run, let the parents be parents, and get in position to photograph what actually happens. The genuine laugh when dad trips over the dog. The two-year-old who would rather throw rocks in the lake than look at the camera. That's the good stuff.

Denver's Best Parks for Family Sessions

Washington Park is probably where I've shot the most Denver family sessions. It has two lakes, flower gardens, big shade trees, and enough open space that even energetic kids can run without me worrying about losing them. The light filters through the canopy in late afternoon and creates these pockets of warmth that are perfect for natural portraits.

City Park gives me the Denver skyline behind your family. There's the lake, the pavilion, and wide open grass with the city and mountains framing the background. It's a different vibe than Wash Park. More open, more dramatic, more of a sense of place.

Cheesman Park has that Pavilion with the stone columns, which is a beautiful architectural element to work into family portraits when the light is right. The park itself is smaller and more contained, which actually works well for families with toddlers who wander.

The Denver Botanic Gardens area is another option for families who want more cultivated landscape. The neighborhood around it has great sidewalks, old trees, and a residential charm that photographs really well.

What a Denver Family Session Looks Like

I usually recommend meeting about 90 minutes before sunset. That gives us time to warm up (the first ten minutes are always a little stiff, that's normal) and then settle into the session as the light gets golden. Most Denver family sessions run 60 to 75 minutes.

I'll guide you loosely. Walk this direction, sit on that blanket, play with the kids over here. But I'm not scripting every moment. The best family photos come from between the poses, when everyone relaxes and forgets the camera is there. That's when I get the real expressions.

Kids under five are wild cards, and I love that. I've been doing this long enough that a toddler meltdown doesn't faze me. We take a snack break, we chase some ducks, we come back to it. No stress. The session works around your family, not the other way around.

Seasonal Considerations in Denver

Fall in Denver is family photo season, and for good reason. The trees at Wash Park and City Park turn gold and red, the light gets warmer earlier in the afternoon, and the temperature is perfect. I book up fast in September and October, so if fall colors are important to you, plan ahead.

Spring and summer sessions work great too. Denver's parks are green and full from May through August. Winter sessions are underrated. Bare trees, soft light, and if we get a light dusting of snow, the photos are incredible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should my family wear for our Denver photo session?

Coordinate, don't match. Pick a color palette of two or three complementary colors and let everyone express their own style within that range. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns. Layers work well because they add visual texture. I send a style guide with more specific suggestions after you book.

My kids are young and unpredictable. Will that be a problem?

Not at all. I have two kids of my own and I have been photographing young families for years. Meltdowns happen. Toddlers wander. Babies need to eat. We roll with it. Some of my favorite images come from the chaotic moments. I build extra time into family sessions so there is no pressure.

Which Denver park do you recommend for our family session?

It depends on your family and what you are going for. Washington Park is my default recommendation because of the variety and beautiful light. City Park is great if you want the skyline in the background. Cheesman Park works well for smaller families or couples with one young child. I am happy to suggest the best fit based on your family size and vibe.

When is the best time of year for family photos in Denver?

Fall, September and October, is the most popular because of the foliage and golden light. But every season works. Spring is green and fresh. Summer gives you long golden hours. Winter has a quiet beauty, especially with a light snow. I shoot family sessions year round in Denver.

Can we bring our dog to the family session?

Please do. Dogs are family. Washington Park and City Park are both dog-friendly on leash. I love including pets in family sessions. Just bring some treats so we can get their attention when we need it.
