Denver, CO Photographer
Professional photography across Denver's neighborhoods, parks, and urban spaces. Based in Boulder, shooting in Denver every week.
I shoot in Denver almost as much as I shoot in Boulder. The city has this incredible mix of urban grit and open green space that keeps surprising me, even after years of hauling my gear down US-36. From the tree-lined paths at Washington Park to the industrial murals in RiNo, Denver gives me locations I could never replicate anywhere else.
When people ask why I drive to Denver so often for sessions, I tell them the same thing: variety. In Boulder, I have mountains and trails and that specific Boulder look. Denver gives me everything else. Brick alleys, neon signs, wide open park lawns, old Victorian porches in Capitol Hill. One afternoon I can shoot a family at City Park with the lake and the skyline behind them, then walk three blocks and get something completely different against a concrete wall covered in street art.
Why Denver Works So Well for Photography
Colorado light is already pretty special. But Denver sits at the perfect intersection of that high-altitude golden hour and actual urban texture. The sun drops behind the mountains and throws this warm glow across downtown that lasts longer than you'd expect. I've shot portraits at Union Station where the light coming through those big windows made the whole session. No flash, no reflectors. Just Denver doing its thing.
The parks here are where a lot of my family and portrait work happens. Washington Park has those two lakes, the flower gardens, the big mature trees that give you shade and dappled light. City Park gives you the Denver Museum and the skyline. Cheesman Park has that Pavilion with the columns. Each one feels different, and I rotate through them depending on what the session needs.
Denver Neighborhoods I Love to Shoot In
RiNo is my go-to for headshots and branding sessions. The murals change every few months, so the backdrops stay fresh. I know which walls catch afternoon light and which ones are in shadow. LoDo and Larimer Square have that classic brick and string-light look that works for just about anyone. And South Broadway has enough character in two blocks to fill an entire portrait gallery.
For sports photography, Denver has me covered in a different way. The rec leagues around Sloan's Lake, the fields near Cranmer Park, the complexes closer to Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Denver youth sports culture is serious, and I love being on the sidelines for it.
Logistics and Getting Around
I'm based in Boulder, so Denver sessions mean a 30 to 45 minute drive for me. I don't charge extra for that. It's just part of how I work along the Front Range. I know the parking situations, I know which parks get crowded on weekends versus weekday evenings, and I know the backup spots when weather decides to be Colorado about things.
Denver's weather deserves its own mention. That 300 days of sunshine stat is real, but afternoon thunderstorms from May through September are equally real. I always build weather flexibility into Denver sessions. If a storm rolls in, we either wait it out (they pass fast) or we reschedule without any hassle. Some of my best shots have come in that ten minutes right after a storm clears, when the sky goes dramatic and the light turns gold.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge extra for Denver sessions since you are based in Boulder?
No. I shoot in Denver regularly and the drive is just part of my normal coverage area. There is no travel fee for Denver sessions. I am usually down there multiple times a week anyway.
What are the best locations for photo sessions in Denver?
It depends on what we are going for. Washington Park and City Park are my top picks for family sessions because of the green space and natural light. RiNo is perfect for headshots and branding with its murals and urban texture. Union Station and LoDo work well for portraits with an architectural feel. I will recommend specific spots based on your session type.
What time of day do you recommend for Denver photo sessions?
Golden hour, which is roughly the last hour or two before sunset, gives the best light in Denver. The high altitude means the light stays warm and directional longer than at sea level. For summer sessions I usually suggest starting around 6 or 6:30 PM. Winter sessions can start earlier, around 3:30 or 4 PM.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of our Denver session?
Colorado weather moves fast. If a storm is coming, we can often just wait 20 minutes and it clears. If it is truly not workable, we reschedule at no extra cost. I always keep an eye on the forecast and will reach out the day before if things look questionable. Overcast days actually produce really nice even light for portraits.
Do you offer all your photography services in Denver?
Yes. I bring everything I offer in Boulder to Denver as well: youth sports, outdoor and adventure, family, portrait and headshot, and local business photography. Denver actually gives me even more variety in backdrops and locations than my home base.
