Broomfield Family Photography

Broomfield families have options when it comes to photo locations, and I've shot at most of them. From the water reflections at Josh's Pond to the cottonwood-lined paths at Brunner Farm Park, this city has parks and open spaces that work beautifully for family sessions. I bring the camera. You bring the chaos. We make something great together.

My Approach to Family Photos

I don't do stiff. I don't line families up smallest to tallest and have everyone say cheese. I mean, we can do one or two of those for grandma if you want, but the real goal is to get your family being your family. The way your daughter climbs on your back. The look your partner gives you when the toddler does something ridiculous. The dog photobombing every single shot. That's the good stuff.

I've got two kids of my own, so I understand the reality of family photo sessions. Kids don't cooperate on command. They get bored, they get silly, they want to run. I work with that energy instead of fighting it. Some of my favorite family photos happened when the "plan" completely fell apart and everyone just started laughing.

Best Broomfield Spots for Family Sessions

Josh's Pond is my number one recommendation for Broomfield family sessions. The pond catches the sky during golden hour, and the surrounding grass and paths give you a clean, natural setting. There's enough space for kids to run around between the more structured shots, and the parking is easy. It's a low-stress location for families with young kids.

Brunner Farm Park is my fall pick. The cottonwood trees along the creek turn gold in late September, and the bridge over the creek gives you a natural frame for group shots. The paths are stroller-friendly, which matters more than people realize when you're wrangling a toddler and trying to get to the next spot.

Lac Amora in the Broadlands neighborhood is a quieter option. The lake and surrounding paths are less crowded than the bigger parks, so you get more privacy during your session. It's especially nice for families who want a relaxed, unhurried feel without other groups nearby.

Community Park works well for families who want open green space with mountain views to the west. The fields are wide enough that you get clean backgrounds without buildings or parking lots creeping in.

What to Expect During the Session

I usually start with a warm-up. We walk, we talk, the kids get used to me being there with a camera. I don't jump straight into posing because nobody is relaxed yet. After five or ten minutes, people forget I'm there, and that's when the real photos happen.

From there, I'll guide you through some natural setups. Walking together, sitting on a blanket, playing a game. These aren't stiff poses. They're prompts that create real interactions. I might ask you to whisper something funny to your kid, or have the siblings race to a tree. The reactions are genuine, and the photos show it.

Sessions run about 60 minutes, which is the sweet spot for most families. Long enough to get variety, short enough that kids don't hit the wall. For families with very young children (under 2), I sometimes recommend a 45-minute session since little ones have shorter fuses.

Timing and Scheduling in Broomfield

Golden hour is everything for outdoor family photos. In Broomfield, that means scheduling for the last 90 minutes before sunset. The exact time shifts with the seasons. Summer sessions start around 6:30 PM. Fall and spring, more like 5:00 PM. Winter sessions start as early as 3:30 PM, but winter light in Colorado is gorgeous, low and warm and soft.

I'm based in Boulder, and Broomfield is a 20-minute drive for me. No travel fees, no extra charges. I'm in Broomfield regularly for sports and other sessions, so I know the area well. Let me know what you're thinking, and I'll help you pick the right spot and time for your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my kids won't cooperate during the session?

That is completely normal and I am prepared for it. I have two kids of my own, so I know the drill. I work with their energy, not against it. Running, playing, being silly, all of that makes for great photos. Some of my best family images come from the unscripted moments.

Can we bring our dog to the family session?

Please do. Dogs are part of the family. I have two dogs myself (Penny Lane and Chewbacca), and I know how to work with pets in the frame. Having the dog there often helps kids relax too. Just bring treats and a leash for the in-between moments.

How many photos do we get from a family session?

A typical 60-minute family session yields 40 to 60 final edited images. Every photo is individually color-corrected and retouched. I don't deliver hundreds of unedited files. You get a curated gallery of the best moments from the session.

What should we wear for family photos in Broomfield?

Coordinated but not matching. Pick a color palette (earth tones, blues, neutrals) and let each person express their own style within it. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and all-white outfits. Layers add visual interest. I send a detailed style guide after booking.

When is the best time of year for family photos in Broomfield?

Fall (late September through mid-October) is the most popular and for good reason. The cottonwoods turn gold and the light is warm and soft. But every season works. Spring has green grass and wildflowers. Summer offers long golden hours. Winter after a light snow is magical, especially with the mountain backdrop.
