Boulder Youth Sports Photographer

I shoot youth sports all over Boulder, from rec league soccer at Foothills Community Park to club tournaments at Pleasant View. These kids play hard, and I want their photos to show it.

Youth Sports Photography in Boulder

Boulder has one of the best youth sports scenes on the Front Range. Between Boulder Valley School District athletics, BVSD rec leagues, and the club teams that practice all over town, there's always a game happening somewhere. I'm usually at one of them with a camera.

What I love about shooting youth sports is the honesty of it. A 12-year-old scoring a goal doesn't pose for the camera. A wrestler on the mat isn't thinking about angles. That's what makes these photos real. I shoot the action, the emotion, the sideline moments, and the team celebrations. The stuff that matters.

Where I Shoot Sports in Boulder

I know the fields and gyms in this town inside out. Pleasant View fields are where a lot of the bigger tournaments happen, and I've learned exactly where to position myself for the best light depending on the time of day. Foothills Community Park is another regular spot for soccer and flag football. Stazio fields handle a lot of lacrosse and soccer action. For indoor sports, I shoot basketball and volleyball at school gyms across the district and at the East Boulder Rec Center.

Each venue has its own challenges. Some fields face east-west, which means harsh backlight in the late afternoon. Others have tree shade that creeps across the field by 4 PM. I know these quirks because I've shot at all of them, multiple times, in every season. That familiarity means I spend less time figuring out logistics and more time focused on your kid's game.

What I Cover

I photograph all youth sports, but here's what I shoot most often in Boulder:

  • Soccer: Club and rec leagues, fall and spring seasons, plus tournaments
  • Lacrosse: Boulder's lacrosse scene is strong, and I love the speed of the game
  • Baseball and softball: Scott Carpenter Park and fields throughout Boulder Valley
  • Basketball: Gym lighting is tricky, but I've invested in the gear and know-how to handle it
  • Football and flag football: Rec leagues and tackle programs
  • Track, cross-country, and swimming: The individual sports where every athlete has their own story

I also shoot team photos, but I keep those loose and real. No stiff grid formations with forced smiles. I want team photos that actually look like the team.

How a Game Day Shoot Works

I show up early, scout the light, and find my angles before the first whistle. During the game, I move constantly. You'll see me on the sideline, behind the goal, wherever I need to be to get the shot. I'm not the photographer sitting in a chair with a long lens. I'm working.

After the game, I process the photos and deliver a full gallery, usually within 3 to 5 days. I organize by player number when I can, which makes it easy for parents to find their kid. Every photo is edited for color and exposure, but I don't do heavy retouching. These are sports photos. They should look real.

Tournament and Season Packages

For teams that want coverage all season, I offer packages that make the math simple. One flat rate covers every home game or a set number of games, plus a team photo session. Tournament packages work the same way: I'm there for the whole event, covering every game your team plays.

Coaches and team managers can reach out directly. I've worked with enough Boulder youth sports organizations to know how the scheduling works, and I'm flexible when games get moved or rained out. That's just part of the deal with Colorado sports.

Boulder Youth Sports Venues

  • Pleasant View Fields: Large multi-field complex, great for tournaments. Best light in the morning and late afternoon. Parking along the east side.
  • Foothills Community Park: Popular for rec league soccer and flag football. Open fields with good sightlines. Afternoon sun comes from the west, so I position accordingly.
  • Stazio Ball Fields: Primarily lacrosse and soccer. The mountain backdrop works well for team photos. Watch for shade from nearby trees in late afternoon.
  • Scott Carpenter Park: Baseball and softball fields with decent lighting. Named after the astronaut. Bleacher access for elevated angles.
  • East Boulder Rec Center: Indoor basketball and volleyball. Gym lighting varies, but I bring supplemental gear when needed.
  • BVSD School Gyms: I've shot in most of the district's gyms. Each one has different lighting, and I know what to expect at each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you photograph individual games or full seasons?

Both. I can cover a single game, a tournament, or an entire season. Season packages give you the best value and mean I get to know the players, which leads to better photos over time. I work with the coach or team manager to build a schedule that fits.

How do you handle indoor sports lighting?

Gym lighting is one of the hardest things in sports photography. I use fast lenses and camera bodies built for low light. I also adjust my white balance for the specific gym because fluorescent lights look different from LEDs. The goal is clean, sharp action shots regardless of the venue.

Can parents order individual prints?

Yes. I deliver a full online gallery and parents can order prints, digital downloads, or packages directly. I also organize photos by player number when possible so families can find their kid quickly without scrolling through hundreds of images.

Do you shoot club and rec league sports?

I shoot everything from casual rec leagues at Foothills Community Park to competitive club teams that travel for tournaments. The level of play doesn't matter to me. The emotions and effort are real at every level, and that's what I'm there to photograph.

What sports do you photograph most in Boulder?

Soccer, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, and football are the most common. But I also shoot swimming, track, cross-country, wrestling, volleyball, and anything else where athletes are competing. If your kid plays it, I can shoot it.
