Boulder Family Photographer

Family sessions in Boulder are my favorite kind of chaos. Kids running along Boulder Creek, dogs jumping into the frame, toddlers doing whatever toddlers do. That's the good stuff.

Family Photography in Boulder

I have two kids of my own, so I know exactly what it's like trying to get everyone to look at the camera at the same time. Here's my secret: I don't try. The best family photos happen when everyone stops performing and starts being themselves. A kid chasing a butterfly. A dad throwing his daughter in the air. A mom laughing at something her son just said. Those are the photos you'll actually frame.

Boulder is an incredible place for family sessions because the outdoor options are endless and the scenery does a lot of the heavy lifting. We don't need a studio backdrop when we have Chautauqua Meadow, The Peoples' Crossing at sunset, or the cottonwoods along Boulder Creek in October.

How I Approach Family Sessions

I keep things loose. We'll meet at the location, I'll suggest a starting point, and then we walk and play. I give some light direction when needed (a general area to stand, which way to face for the light), but I'm not going to put your family in a rigid pose and tell everyone to say cheese.

For families with young kids, this approach works so much better. Toddlers don't take direction from anyone, let alone a photographer they just met. So instead of fighting that, I work with it. Let them explore. Let them pick up rocks and splash in the creek. I'll be shooting the whole time, and the moments that happen naturally are always the best ones.

For families with older kids and teenagers, I find that the candid approach helps them relax too. Nobody wants to stand stiffly for 45 minutes. We walk, we talk, I'll crack some jokes, and the photos feel natural because the experience was natural.

My Favorite Boulder Family Photo Spots

I have a handful of go-to locations that work beautifully for families, and I pick based on your family's vibe, your kids' ages, and the season.

The Peoples' Crossing is probably my number one recommendation. It's right at the west end of Pearl Street, so it's easy to get to, and the red rock formations with the Flatirons behind them create a layered backdrop that looks incredible at sunset. There's enough room for kids to roam without anyone wandering into traffic.

Boulder Creek Path runs through the heart of town and offers shade, water, bridges, and plenty of variety within a short walk. Kids love throwing rocks in the creek (which I encourage during sessions). The footbridge near Central Park is one of my favorite spots for a quick family grouping.

Wonderland Lake is perfect for families with little ones. The loop trail is flat, stroller-friendly, and the lake reflects the mountains on calm evenings. It's a quieter part of north Boulder, and the light at sunset is warm and soft.

Chautauqua Park works for families who don't mind a bit of walking. The meadow below the Flatirons is the classic Boulder shot, and fall colors here are beautiful. I usually suggest meeting at the trailhead parking area and walking into the meadow together.

Betasso Preserve is my recommendation for families who want something less obvious. It's a short drive west of town, with ponderosa pines, meadows, and mountain views. Fewer people, more privacy, and a real feeling of being out in nature.

What to Wear and Bring

I always tell families to coordinate, not match. Pick a color palette (earth tones work great in Boulder) and let everyone wear something they feel good in. Avoid logos and busy patterns. Layers are smart because even summer evenings cool down fast here.

Bring snacks for little kids. A well-timed fruit pouch has saved more sessions than I can count. If your dog is part of the family, bring them too. My dogs Penny Lane and Chewbacca show up in my own family photos, so I get it.

Session Details

A typical family session runs about 60 to 90 minutes, which gives us enough time to explore a location, get a mix of candid and lightly directed shots, and not rush. I deliver 50 to 80 edited photos in an online gallery within a week. Every image is color-corrected and cropped, but I keep the editing natural. No heavy filters, no skin smoothing. Just real light and real people.

Frequently Asked Questions

My kids are young and unpredictable. Will that be a problem?

Not even a little. I have two kids, so I am very used to the chaos. Young kids are actually some of my favorite subjects because they are completely genuine. I do not expect toddlers to sit still or smile on command. I work with their energy and photograph the real moments. Bring snacks and let them be themselves.

How long is a typical family session?

Most family sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That gives us enough time to walk, play, get a variety of shots, and not feel rushed. Shorter mini-sessions of 30 minutes are available too if you just need a few updated family photos.

Can we bring our dog to the session?

Please do. I bring my own dogs to my family photos. Dogs are family. Just bring a leash and maybe a few treats to keep them interested. Some of my favorite family photos include the family dog doing something completely unplanned.

What should we wear for family photos in Boulder?

Coordinate colors but do not match exactly. Earth tones, muted blues, greens, and creams look great in Boulder landscapes. Avoid bright logos and busy patterns. Wear layers because Colorado evenings cool down fast. Most importantly, wear something comfortable because we will be walking and playing.

When is the best time for a family session in Boulder?

Golden hour, which is about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. The light is warm and flattering, and the temperature is usually comfortable. Fall is my busiest season for family photos because the colors in Boulder are incredible in September and October. But every season works well here.
