If you’re a photographer trying to build real connections in Boulder’s creative community, this spring has something worth circling on your calendar.
The Boulder County Film Commission is launching the Boulder Creative Expo & Spring Schmoozer on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Boulder JCC. This is a first-of-its-kind event that brings together Boulder’s creative sector and the broader local business community in one room. Think filmmakers, designers, marketers, and yes, photographers, mixing with the kinds of businesses that actually hire us. It’s organized through the Boulder Chamber, so the crowd will be a real mix of creatives and clients, not just people in the same boat comparing notes.
I’ll be honest: boulder creative networking events for photographers can feel hit or miss. A lot of them are either too niche (everyone there already knows everyone) or too general (you spend an hour explaining what you do to someone who will never need a headshot). This one feels different because the Film Commission is specifically trying to bridge the gap between the creative world and the business community. That’s the gap where real work comes from. Local businesses need photography constantly, whether it’s for a website refresh, a product launch, or team headshots, and most of them don’t know who to call.
If you’re thinking about going, here’s my practical advice: bring a small portfolio you can show on your phone. A tight gallery of 10 to 15 images across two or three types of work (headshots, events, commercial) is way more useful than a stack of business cards. And when you introduce yourself, lead with what problems you solve, not your gear or your editing style. “I do headshots for local businesses and teams” lands better than “I’m a professional photographer.” People remember specifics.
Whether you’re a fellow creative looking to collaborate or a Boulder business owner who’s been meaning to update your brand photos, this is a solid place to start a conversation. I’d love to meet you there, and if you want to chat about what working together might look like before or after the event, just reach out and we’ll set something up.
