About Jody
I moved to Boulder from Florida a few years ago, and it changed everything about my photography. The mountains, the light, the outdoor culture. This is where I was supposed to be shooting all along.
From Florida to the Rockies
I built my photography career in Florida. Beaches, families, events. Good work, steady clients, and sunshine twelve months a year. But something was missing. I kept looking at photos from Colorado and thinking, "I want to shoot there." When the opportunity came to move to Boulder, I did not hesitate. I packed up my family, my gear, and my two dogs, and we headed west.
That first fall in Colorado, watching the aspens turn gold against the Flatirons, I knew I had made the right call. The light here is different. The landscapes are different. The people are different. Everyone is active, everyone is outside, and that energy shows up in every session I shoot.
My Approach
I do not do "say cheese." If you are looking for a photographer who will line everyone up and count to three, I am probably not your guy. My sessions are about real moments. I want to see what your family actually looks like when you are having fun. I want to catch the expression on your kid's face when they score a goal. I want to photograph you and your partner laughing at something only you two think is funny.
I give direction when it helps and I stay out of the way when it does not. I shoot in natural light because Colorado gives us some of the best light in the country. I know where to find it, when to chase it, and how to use it.
What I Photograph
Youth sports is my passion. I am a sports parent myself, and I love the raw emotion of competition. The nervous faces before the game. The celebrations. The tough losses. That is real life, and it deserves to be photographed well.
Outdoor and adventure photography is where Colorado really shines. Engagement sessions at Chautauqua, senior portraits on NCAR trails, couples hiking the Flatirons. I shoot people doing what they love in places that take your breath away.
Families, portraits, headshots, and local business photography round out the rest of my work. Every type of session gets a different approach because a family shoot should feel nothing like a headshot session.
Gear and Permits
I shoot with two camera bodies on every session because you do not get a redo when a kid scores a goal or a couple has their first kiss as the sun drops. My primary lenses are a wide-angle for environmental portraits and landscapes, and a medium telephoto for tight portraits and sports action. Everything runs on natural light. I carry it all in a camera backpack that has been up every major trail in Boulder County.
I hold commercial photography permits for Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks and Rocky Mountain National Park. I handle all permit logistics for every session. You never need to research or apply for anything.
Local Knowledge
I have scouted and photographed at dozens of locations across the Front Range, from Chautauqua and The Peoples' Crossing in Boulder to Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park to the foothills trails around Golden and Nederland. I know which trails face east for sunrise, which face west for golden hour, where the wind gets blocked by rock formations, and where the parking fills up first. That local knowledge is built into every session plan.
I write detailed photography guides about these locations so you can see exactly what each spot looks like, when the light is best, and what to expect before we ever meet. Over 40 guides covering Colorado's best photo locations, session preparation, and sport-specific tips.
Beyond the Camera
When I am not shooting, I am probably on a trail with my dogs Penny Lane and Chewbacca, or watching my kids' games from the stands (and trying not to pull out my camera). I play guitar, I go to way too many live shows, and I am always looking for the next great spot to bring clients.
I am constantly scouting. A morning run on the Mesa Trail becomes a mental note about where the light will be at golden hour. A drive through Lyons turns into a list of spots for fall family sessions. It never really turns off, and honestly, I would not want it to.
Why Boulder County
Boulder is not just where I live. It is why my photography looks the way it does. The Flatirons at sunrise, the cottonwoods along Boulder Creek in October, the way the light hits the foothills at 6 PM in summer. This landscape shapes every session.
But beyond the scenery, Boulder County is a community that values being outside, being active, and being real. My clients hike Coal Creek Trail in Louisville, play sports at the fields in Broomfield, run businesses in downtown Longmont and Lafayette. They want photos that reflect their actual lives, not some staged version of it. That is exactly what I do.
